Polyurea Joint Sealant

Flexible polyurea joint sealant for expansion joints, bridge headers, and cold storage where joint movement and watertight performance are critical.

Polyurea Joint Sealant

A polyurea joint sealant is a two-component, high-solids elastomeric material that seals concrete joints against moisture, debris, and contaminant infiltration while remaining flexible enough to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction. Semi-rigid joint fillers protect joint edges from wheeled traffic first and foremost. A joint sealant, by contrast, prioritizes long-term flexibility and watertight performance in environments where joint movement is significant.

HTS Chemical manufactures PE-45, a polyurea sealant with a Shore A 50 hardness that delivers the ideal balance of flexibility and durability for concrete joint sealant applications. PE-45 is an aromatic, rapid-setting, self-leveling formula that achieves traffic-ready cure in just 30 to 90 minutes depending on ambient conditions. It is a high-solids formula (95% solids) with zero VOCs that cures rapidly and remains flexible even in sub-freezing temperatures. PE-45 can be applied at temperatures from 20°F to 135°F. PE-45 is USDA and FDA compliant, making it safe for use in food-processing, food-storage, and pharmaceutical environments.

A semi-rigid joint filler (PE-65, PE-85, PE-90) protects joint edges from spalling under heavy traffic by filling the joint with a firm, durable material. A flexible joint sealant like PE-45 accommodates joint movement while maintaining a watertight seal. The choice depends on the joint type: control joints and construction joints in interior warehouse floors typically get a semi-rigid filler, while expansion joints, exterior slabs, and cold-storage joints typically require a flexible sealant. See Technical Bulletin TB-5 for detailed guidance on filler vs sealant selection.

Polyurea joint sealants are used wherever concrete joints need protection from moisture, chemicals, and debris. Food and beverage processing facilities rely on PE-45 to seal joints against bacteria-harboring contamination. The USDA/FDA compliance and flush finish make it ideal for sanitary environments. Cold-storage and freezer facilities use PE-45 because it remains flexible at sub-zero temperatures where other sealants become brittle and crack, allowing moisture and contaminants to penetrate the joint.

Frequently Asked Questions

PE-45 is ready for light traffic in as little as 30 minutes, with full traffic typically within 90 minutes depending on temperature and joint dimensions.
Joints must be clean, dry, and free of old sealant, backer rod, debris, and loose concrete. A crack chaser or joint cleanout saw should be used to profile the sidewalls and expose clean concrete. See Technical Bulletin TB-6 for detailed joint preparation best practices.
Yes. The Shore A 50 hardness and flexible formulation of PE-45 make it well-suited for concrete expansion joint filler applications where the joint will experience regular movement. For expansion joints with very large movement ranges, consult HTS technical support for product recommendations.
